Ceide Fields

We went to the Ceide Fields outside Ballycastle yesterday as part of our school tour. It was a very sunny and very windy day out there. We learned all about how the ancient farm walls came to be formed and found, and we even got to push a probe into the ground to see how far below the surface of the bog they are. Here are some pictures of the trip.

Garda visit to the school

On Monday, Garda Pat Coleman visited the school to tell us all about staying safe at Halloween. He told us about how dangerous fireworks can be, how to be safe if we are walking in the dark, and that we should take extra care not to frighten anybody who might be living alone. We couldn’t let him go without trying out some of his stuff!

Special Visitors to Shraheen NS

Knockmore’s Colm Reape dropped by today and he had the Clarke Cup with him. Colm was a member of this year’s  Under 21 Mayo team that won the All Ireland on the May Bank Holiday weekend. The children (and staff) were all very excited to meet Colm and to hold the cup. Colm spoke with the children also, and told them how important it was that they practice very hard and that they also eat the right foods.

Visit to Ballina

We visited the Garda Station in Ballina today and had great fun looking around. We went into the cells, took our thumbprints and got locked up in the Garda van! The fifth class girls and the sixth class boys got to travel to Ballina in the Garda car! Thanks to Garda Pat Coleman for organising this terrific trip. We also went to Belleek where we saw the Creteboom and the wicker squirrel. We tried to feed the ducks but they weren’t interested!

Winners of the RSA/Mayo County Council competition

The boys in sixth class were delighted to travel to Ballyhaunis this morning to collect our prize for winning the Primary section of the latest RSA/Mayo County Council road safety competition. We had to write a radio ad promoting road safety and couldn’t believe it when we were told we won. Here’s a link to some more information about it, and here’s the photo taken during the Tommy Marren show. Our ad has been professionally recorded and will be played over the summer.

School Tour

We had great fun on our school tour this year. We went to the Michael Davitt Museum in Straide, the Museum of Country Life in Turlough and Mayo Leisure Point. We learned lots of interesting things and were able to walk around the grounds of the museums and enjoy the beautiful weather. We then used up all the energy we had left for the bowling and Nokey’s play area.

Science Experiment – What Do Seeds Need To Grow?

We found out what seeds need to grow. We planted grass seeds in plastic cups, and put most of them in the windowsill. We didn’t give water to just one of these.

We put two under a cardboard box. We watered one of these.

Here are our results. The ones that didn’t get watered didn’t grow. Can you tell which is the one that was watered but kept under the cardboard box?
